The question we hear most in orthodontic consultations is not “should I straighten my teeth” but “can I do it without anyone noticing”. That is what makes clear aligners so popular, especially with people working in the offices around Bellandur and the Outer Ring Road.
Aligners are a genuinely good option for many cases. They are also oversold. Here is the comparison we actually give patients at the chair.
The short answer
Choose clear aligners if your teeth need mild to moderate correction, you can commit to wearing trays 20 to 22 hours a day, appearance during treatment matters to you, and the higher cost is acceptable.
Choose braces if your case involves severe crowding, big gaps, badly rotated teeth or a significant bite problem, you would rather not have to remember anything daily, or cost is the deciding factor.
Let the orthodontist decide if you are not sure. A scan and 20 minutes settle it, and in a lot of cases both options are genuinely possible, which means the choice comes back to you.
What each one actually is
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent, removable trays custom made for your teeth. You wear each tray for one to two weeks, then move to the next. Each tray moves your teeth a fraction of a millimetre. The full sequence is planned digitally at the start, so you can see the projected end result before you begin. Brands vary; some are international, some are made in India, and the difference shows up mostly in cost and in how complex a case they can handle.
Braces are brackets fixed to each tooth, connected by a wire that the orthodontist adjusts every four to six weeks. Metal is the standard. Ceramic brackets are tooth-coloured and much less visible, at a higher cost, and they are slightly more fragile.
Side by side
Appearance. Aligners win clearly. Most people will not notice them. Ceramic braces are a middle option. Metal braces are visible, though far smaller than they were a generation ago.
What they can fix. Braces win. Aligners handle crowding, spacing, and mild to moderate bite issues well. Braces handle everything aligners do plus the harder cases: severe rotations, teeth that need to move a long way, large bite corrections, and cases needing extractions. A good orthodontist will tell you plainly if your case sits outside what aligners do well.
Time. Roughly similar, and driven by your case rather than the appliance. Simple aligner cases finish in 6 to 9 months. Full cases with either option typically run 12 to 24 months.
Comfort. Aligners are easier on the cheeks and lips. Both feel tight and tender for a couple of days after each change. Braces bring wire pokes and occasional ulcers, mostly early on.
Eating. Aligners come out for meals, so nothing is off the menu. With braces you avoid hard and sticky foods for the whole treatment, which is a real daily constraint.
Cleaning. Aligners come out, so you brush and floss normally. Braces need careful cleaning around every bracket, and patients who do not manage it end up with white marks or decay around the brackets.
Discipline. Braces win here, and it matters more than people expect. Braces work whether or not you think about them. Aligners only work while worn, and 20 to 22 hours a day is a real commitment. If you know you will take them out for every coffee and forget to put them back, braces will get you a better result.
Visits. Aligners need fewer and shorter check-ins. Braces need an adjustment every four to six weeks.

These are indicative market ranges to help you plan, not a price list. Aligner cost swings the most because it depends on the number of trays and the brand. A short case correcting mild front-teeth crowding sits near the bottom of that range; a full complex case with a premium brand sits near the top. Be careful with very low aligner quotes. The usual catch is that the quote covers only the first set of trays, with refinements and the retainer billed later. Ask for the complete cost including refinements and retainers before you commit.
The part most people forget: retainers
Teeth move back. This is true after braces and after aligners, and it is the single most common reason people end up unhappy years later. Whichever option you pick, you will need a retainer afterwards, usually nightly for a long time. Ask whether the retainer is included in the quote. If a clinic does not bring up retainers at all, that tells you something.
